| What is a Survivor?

"An individual is considered a cancer survivor from
the time of diagnosis, through the balance of his or her life. Family
members, friends, and caregivers are also impacted by the survivorship
experience and are therefore included in this definition." A quote taken
from the National Colon Cancer Alliance website.
It's a very strange realization when you finally accept the title of
"survivor". In the past we have thought that in order to be a "survivor"
someone has to die or be eliminated (like in the reality show
"Survivor"), but here in the world of cancer, we have a new
understanding of survivorship.
This past weekend was Easter, and I did some "soul" searching, and
realized that to me, this holiday was particularly special, as the
symbolism applied to my own life as a survivor. At the time of diagnosis
with cancer, your old life as you knew it dies. No matter how hard you may
try to maintain that old life, it is gone. Then you go through a period of
grief and loss, (usually during treatment) but then one day, usually after
a proclamation that you are finished with Chemo, or
surgery or some sort of "all clear", you realize you are no longer a
cancer "patient", but you are a "Survivor". This is a birth of a whole new
life. You have a whole new identity and purpose and a family you never
knew existed... other Survivors! People who have gone through the same
anger and fear and loss. Loss of security, loss of body image, loss of
"self".... But we also gain... new friends, an appreciation for LIFE and
rejoice in the ability to help others through the moments of darkness.
Survivor is a difficult title to grasp. Personally, I would rather adopt
the title of cancer "Warrior", "Victor" or "Master".
But from the moment you are diagnosed till the moment you move on from
this earth, you are a Survivor. Welcome to the Sisterhood and let us
embrace you on your journey, for we are here for you, as others have been
for us.

Her Story
2004
In April of 2004, Cindi detects two small lumps, and gets tested.
In May, she is given a diagnosis of Ductile Carcinoma, Highly aggressive.
